It is better than not having tab groups, but it is a strange implementation for sure.
Firefox (or rather some FOSS browser) desperately needs for the GUI to be capable of encapsulating these types of widgets on a general custom basis, so an extension/addon could handle the likes of this, as well as general keyboard shortcut customization.
